EVENT INFO:

Date: February 14, 2018

Location: Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland, Florida, United States

Perpetrator: Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student of the school

Victims: 17 people were killed, including 14 students and 3 staff members. 17 others were injured.

Shooting: Cruz, who had been expelled from the school in 2017, entered the school during the afternoon of Valentine’s Day and began firing a semi-automatic rifle into classrooms and hallways. The shooting lasted for approximately 6 minutes.

Arrest: Cruz was arrested by police about an hour after the shooting, without incident, at a nearby shopping center.

Investigation: The investigation revealed that Cruz had a history of disciplinary issues and had been reported to the authorities for making threats and displaying erratic behavior. He had also been identified as a potential threat by the FBI in 2017, but the agency failed to follow up on the tip.

Aftermath: The shooting led to widespread outrage and calls for gun control measures. The students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, including survivors of the shooting, became prominent advocates for gun control and school safety, leading to the March for Our Lives movement. The shooting also led to changes in gun laws in Florida and other states.

Trial: In October 2022, Cruz pleaded guilty to all 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. In November 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
