I think SEO does start with keyword research and the next step is domain name selection. SEO, as I use the term in this case does not include branding. I often have clients with their business name as the domain. That works well for branding, business cards and letterhead. I then recommend buying and optimizing keyword based domains to generate leads and traffic.
